maybe UA is trying to take the high road and not take any chances and since their IT and infra-structure appears to be able to support it - then go for it?
It may be that the delay was predicted to be much longer, causing the advance notice and rebooking, but that United was able to get the flight back on line much sooner than anticipated.

apparently, first had hot food
flight little over an hour delayed
- sounded like crew availability in SFO?
probably related to DEN-OGG....again, emphasizing my concern that it is the major flights in/out of hubs...didnt track the DEN-OGG, but typically - if I recall - it is a 777 that starts in EWR

Reclaim? When did EWR ever lose that title?

I'm watching carefully. I have a flight from SAV at 2:45 to EWR for a 8:40 LIS connection. I thought this would be a safe 3:40 connection. Since this change took place, one day was a cancellation, and two days were delayed so badly, we would have missed our flight. Yikes!

I see your plane didn't arrive until 10:02PM - over 5 hours late.
Edit: I see your LIS flight was delayed almost 3 hours. Hoping you made it.

The worst will be anyone trying to get from YUL/YYZ to NYC. I was stuck in a similar multi-day weather pattern last year. It was awful, worst I had ever experienced flying.

Was on ORD-IAD last night and because incoming flight was from EWR, it kept on getting delayed. Luckily, I switched to a different DCA flight, but that IAD flight kept on getting delayed by the hour. It still hasnt left, now delayed 20 hours. I dont know what they told people after the first couple of hours of delay, but it would be terrible to be kept on being told itll be another hour for a day straight. Why not just cancel?

It's in the air now. Departed 21 hours 13 minutes late, targeted to arrive 21 hours 32 minutes late.

United 1862 from ORD to IAD is arriving 22hrs. Late today. How is this not required to be a cancellation?

No such requirement exists. Note vast majority of the passengers bailed, finding alternatives. Passengers are eligible for cash refunds with just a 2 hour delay so no particular advantage of a cancellation to the customers.

The problem is that when they keep on incrementally delaying, some passengers might think it might be better to wait than rebook.

Unless a problem was identified on the incoming flight, I don't think anyone checks the plane out upon arrival unitl the incoming crew arrives. For one thing, an issue can occur in between the time.
I think the OP just had a string of bad luck. You tend to remember experiences like that more than normal operations. I too have had more major delays this year vs past.
IMO, IRROPS happens to everyone, but each airline handles IRROPS differently. That's what's important to me. For UA, it's pretty much YMMV.

Agree, sometimes they have no clue when the flight will leave and they just keep pushing it 30min every 30min. I've seen pax waiting at the gate for hours afraid to go get something to eat because they keep thinking the flight will leave soon.

What I dont get is that I can see when my flight is going to be delayed, but UA cant seem to see it. Im talking about things like the plane that is going to take us isnt going to be here at boarding time, but UA cant seem to see that. And Im talking about non-hub airports where they arent going to swap eqipement. And I rarely even see that at a hub for less than a dead plane mech issue.
They dragged us on and off a DEN-TPA flight that eventually was CX- and the pilot called it when we boarded.
Id say that these are automation issues, but that should be flagging all these simple things
